Claus Raible Trio
Three musicians. One pulse. A distinctly personal vision of jazz.
Pianist and composer Claus Raible brings together a trio in which extensive musical knowledge meets spontaneity, precision, and uncompromising rhythmic drive. With a handpicked rhythm section of outstanding international musicians, he creates a sound that is highly individual, rhythmically alive, and firmly rooted in the expressive power of jazz.
At the center is Raible’s piano: powerful, agile, harmonically sophisticated, and shaped by a distinctive sense of melody and form. His playing combines virtuosity with clarity, rhythmic intensity with lyrical depth, and an instinctive ability to turn every musical situation into a space for interaction and discovery. Bebop remains an important point of reference, while Raible’s artistic identity reaches far beyond stylistic categories.
The trio is more than a piano-led format. Its rhythm section provides constant movement and flexibility, responding instinctively to Raible’s ideas through sharply defined accents, unexpected shifts, open spaces, and collective momentum. Every performance leaves room for spontaneous development while maintaining a strong sense of direction and form.
Raible’s own compositions form a central part of the repertoire, characterized by strong melodic identities, sophisticated harmonic structures, rhythmic tension, and generous space for improvisation. Form becomes a framework for interaction, development, and spontaneous discovery.
The trio’s artistic development is documented by Live At Birdland, Trio, and Fugitive Figures—all three included on the Longlist of the German Record Critics’ Award. Together, the recordings reflect a continuing exploration of Raible’s trio concept, from concentrated live energy to increasingly personal compositions and a highly refined ensemble sound.
Claus Raible’s international career spans more than three decades. Over the years, his trio has featured outstanding musicians including Mario Gonzi, Paulo Cardoso, Ed Thigpen, Martin Zenker, Ben Dixon, Jimmy Cobb, Isla Eckinger, Alvin Queen, Giorgos Antoniou, Xaver Hellmeier, Milos Colovic, and many others. Their individual voices and musical personalities have each contributed to the continuing evolution of the trio.
The Claus Raible Trio stands for jazz with a strong individual voice: rhythmically alive, harmonically sophisticated, open to the moment, and driven by the power of three musicians listening, responding, and creating together.
